A Few Shots of Happy Fall Sqirrels

For all you squirrel-lovers out there, interest has not flagged here. Oscar lives out of town but these handsome ones are no doubt some of his relatives. Cousins, I'd say.

They really are eating brownies. I found some stale ones and my crew have eaten chocolate croissant and granola and breakfast bars so brownies are not a stretch. Anything with chocolate is actually their favourite.

Blackie says that he's just as cute as those squirrels.

Almost Spring!

The squirrels were dashing about the back yard, happy in the warmth of our one-day Spring last week.

Since this last week of March 2012 started, however, we're back to winter. Water in puddles is frozen and our furry friends are huddled back in their nests waiting for the next blast of sun and warmth.

Hopefully,. they won't have to wait long.

Winter Squirrels are Doing just Fine

And they are eating well this winter. Today, they had apple peelings, carrot peelings, some bird seed and left-over bread.

I found some cinnamon pinwheels in the garbage, all wrapped in wax paper in a cookie tin, and they dined lavishly on these yesterday. I have saved some for tomorrow.

Yes, my rodents are doing just fine.

Rastus, the Almonte Chipmonk

Back this summer, Rastus, the common chipmunk. And he/she has a girl/boy friend!

Such astounding markings on this tiny rodent.

Chipmunk Eating Sun Flower Seeds

The chipmunk makes a stealthy approach.
This is Rastus, the voracious chipmunk who lived beneath the wooden deck at my father's in Almonte, Ontario.

Recently, for good or not, we gave Rastus a small piece of chocolate. He was over-the-moon with delight. Their taste-buds must have a sweetness detector. And squirrels must, too, for when I put out some crumbs of stale brownies, my backyard dwelling rodents went wild.

Maybe these little beasts have more in common with us than what we like to think.
Here he is stuffing the pouches in the side of his mouth with seeds.
